Alive Capital and enspired partner to optimize Romanian battery storage, shifting the focus from simple BESS installation to smart market operations.

Alive Capital & enspired Bring Automated Storage to Romania — NRG-IA
Alive Capital and Austrian company enspired have announced a strategic partnership for the Romanian battery storage market, offering a joint solution for owners of BESS assets, both standalone and co-located with renewable generation projects. The partnership aims to provide market access, automated trading, and revenue optimization for batteries across multiple energy market segments. Alive Capital brings local expertise in energy portfolio management, aggregation, forecasting, dispatching, and commercial operation. enspired provides its proprietary optimization and trading platform for storage assets, used for automated decision-making regarding charging, discharging, and participation in various markets. The companies point to a clear objective: batteries in Romania must become intelligently operated commercial assets, not just grid-connected hardware. Storage transitions from technical project to market asset In Romania, battery development has entered an accelerated phase. According to data presented in the partnership announcement, by May 2026, the BESS capacity connected to the National Power Grid had reached 600 MW of installed capacity and 1.2 GWh of storage capacity. Already signed grid connection agreements indicate a project pipeline of approximately 9 GW of additional capacity. These figures demonstrate the scale of investment interest, yet the gap between announced projects and commercially operated assets remains critical. A battery generates economic value when it can charge during low-price hours, discharge during high-price hours, reduce imbalances, and participate in available flexibility markets. This logic explains enspired's entry into Romania through Alive Capital. As solar and wind energy grow, prices become more volatile between high-production hours and peak hours. Batteries can transform this volatility into system flexibility and revenue for asset owners, provided they are operated using algorithms, forecasting, and real market access. Alive Capital brings the local platform, enspired brings automated optimization Alive Capital is positioned as an integrated energy services platform, active in supply, aggregation, dispatching, forecasting, operations, and asset management. In March 2026, the company also announced a memorandum of understanding with Sieyuan Electric to develop up to 2.5 GWh of storage capacity by 2030, in both standalone and co-located configurations. This context makes the partnership with enspired highly relevant. Alive Capital is not merely entering a one-off technological relationship, but is expanding its positioning in the flexibility space, where batteries, forecasting, aggregation, and trading become parts of the same economic model. enspired is positioned as a commercial optimizer for batteries, featuring automated trading technology and experience across European markets. Through its partnership with Alive Capital, the company aims to enable Romanian asset owners to participate simultaneously in multiple markets and capitalize on opportunities arising from price spreads, imbalances, and ancillary services. The Argeș project shows the scale of the new market The partnership already has a major reference point in Romania. enspired has been contracted to optimize one of the largest standalone storage projects in Southeast Europe, with a capacity of 202 MW / 404 MWh. The project is being developed by Repono in Argeș County, alongside Gunvor and enspired. Gunvor will commercially manage the project's capacity through a cap-and-floor tolling structure, while enspired will optimize the asset across available revenue streams, including access to energy and ancillary services markets. The project aims to enter commercial operation in the second quarter of 2027, subject to financing and construction milestones. This project highlights the market's direction. Investors are no longer just focused on securing permits and installing battery containers. The commercial model demands contracting, optimization, market access, risk control, and the ability to monetize stored energy at the right moments. Batteries require pricing, forecasting, and speed of response Storage operates economically by leveraging the difference between time intervals. Cheap energy from one hour can become highly valuable a few hours later. For a battery, the decision to charge or discharge must be made rapidly, based on prices, forecasts, technical constraints, imbalances, and system requirements. This is where automated optimization comes in. Software can quickly calculate where it is most efficient to deploy the battery: on the spot market, the intraday market, for imbalance reduction, or for system services, where the market framework allows. For the asset owner, these decisions can mean the difference between an underutilized battery and one capable of generating recurring revenues. For the grid, the impact is broader. A well-operated battery can assist in integrating renewable generation,…
