Gasoline Drops to RON 8.42/l; Diesel Below RON 9 at Petrom — NRG-IA
Ghid Consumator Author: Ioana BuzoaicaFuel prices realign as standard gasoline starts at RON 8.42/l and diesel drops to RON 8.98/l at Petrom, driven by sub-$80 Brent and retail competition.
Standard gasoline fell on Thursday morning to RON 8.42/l in Bucharest, Timișoara, Iași, and Constanța, while in Cluj-Napoca the lowest displayed price reached RON 8.39/l . Standard diesel also slipped below the RON 9/l threshold at the cheapest filling stations, hitting a low of RON 8.98/l in the capital and several other major cities. The move marks a rapid realignment of the fuel market following a series of price cuts implemented by major retail networks. Petrom is setting the pace for the lowest prices, OMV has brought gasoline below RON 8.5/l in Bucharest, and Rompetrol, MOL, Lukoil, and SOCAR are gradually aligning their rates, with differences ranging from a few bani to several dozen bani per liter. However, these prices must be interpreted with an essential distinction: the minimum price is not the same as the city average . While gasoline can be found below RON 8.5/l at certain stations, the average in Bucharest remains slightly above this threshold. For diesel, the RON 9/l mark has been breached at the lowest-priced stations, particularly Petrom, but averages in major cities still hover above RON 9/l. Bucharest: Petrom sets the minimum, OMV slips below RON 8.5/l In Bucharest, data consulted on the morning of June 18 indicates an average price of approximately RON 8.51/l for standard gasoline and RON 9.02/l for standard diesel. The minimums are lower: RON 8.42/l for gasoline and RON 8.98/l for diesel. Across the networks, the picture is clear. Petrom displays the lowest prices among the major chains, at RON 8.42/l for gasoline and RON 8.98/l for diesel. OMV slips below the RON 8.5/l threshold for gasoline at RON 8.48/l , while its standard diesel is priced at RON 9.04/l . Rompetrol positions itself at RON 8.53/l for gasoline and RON 9.04/l for diesel. MOL and Lukoil offer standard gasoline at around RON 8.58/l and diesel at approximately RON 9.04–9.14/l , depending on the station and the update time. For drivers, the difference between RON 8.42/l and RON 8.58/l seems small at first glance. However, for a 50-liter tank, the difference amounts to about RON 8 . In a period of volatile prices, these differences become highly visible, especially for fleets, haulers, and high-mileage drivers. Major cities: Cluj records the lowest minimum for gasoline In major cities, prices are very close but not identical. Bucharest, Timișoara, Iași, and Constanța display the same minimum of RON 8.42/l for standard gasoline and RON 8.98/l for diesel. Cluj-Napoca drops slightly below this level for its gasoline minimum, reaching RON 8.39/l , and has a diesel minimum of RON 8.96/l at its cheapest stations. Fuel prices in major cities – June 18, 2026, 07:15 AM Bucharest: Minimum standard gasoline: RON 8.42/l Minimum standard diesel: RON 8.98/l Average gasoline: RON 8.51/l Average diesel: RON 9.02/l Cluj-Napoca: Minimum standard gasoline: RON 8.39/l Minimum standard diesel: RON 8.96/l Average gasoline: RON 8.54/l Average diesel: RON 9.03/l Timișoara: Minimum standard gasoline: RON 8.42/l Minimum standard diesel: RON 8.98/l Average gasoline: RON 8.54/l Average diesel: RON 9.04/l Iași: Minimum standard gasoline: RON 8.42/l Minimum standard diesel: RON 8.98/l Average gasoline: RON 8.51/l Average diesel: RON 9.02/l Constanța: Minimum standard gasoline: RON 8.42/l Minimum standard diesel: RON 8.98/l Average gasoline: RON 8.52/l Average diesel: RON 9.03/l Diesel drops below RON 9/l only at the minimum threshold Diesel remains more expensive than gasoline in most relevant comparisons, even though it has fallen below RON 9/l at the lowest-priced stations. In Bucharest, Timișoara, Iași, and Constanța, the minimum of RON 8.98/l marks a significant shift from levels in the first half of the month, when diesel was much closer to RON 9.2–9.5/l. However, the average remains above RON 9/l. This distinction is crucial for accurate reporting. It cannot be said that diesel has fallen below RON 9/l across the board in Romania. Rather, standard diesel starts at RON 8.98/l in several major cities, but the average remains above the RON 9/l threshold . For haulers and fleets, diesel is far more critical than gasoline. A reduction of 10 bani/l can translate into significant savings on large volumes, but the actual impact depends on refueling frequency, contract types, station locations, and the speed at which price cuts propagate across all networks. Petrom set the tone, other networks aligned Economica reported on Wednesday evening a new price cut of 10 bani/liter applied by Petrom and OMV to gasoline. This move followed successive reductions in recent days and was followed by adjustments across other networks: Rompetrol reduced gasoline by 5 bani/liter, while MOL, Lukoil, and SOCAR lowered gasoline by 10 bani/liter. For diesel, Petrom had already dropped to RON 8.98/l , while OMV and Rompetrol positioned themselves at around RON 9.04/l . MOL, Lukoil, and SOCAR remained higher, in the RON 9.14/l range, but competitive pressure is mounting as…
