The state cut the excise duty, but the market recovered the difference This week's diesel price trends demonstrate how quickly a fiscal intervention can be neutralized by a strong market movement. For the September 1–15 period, the Ministry of Finance increased the temporary excise duty reduction for standard diesel from 20% to 25% . The effective excise duty fell to RON 2,103.22/1,000 liters , compared to RON 2,243.43/1,000 liters in the second half of August. The incremental shift from a 20% to a 25% reduction was reflected on September 1 in a price drop of approximately 17 bani/liter across the OMV Petrom network. A few days later, diesel returned to RON 10.19–10.25/liter at the upper end of the group's stations. This development does not mean the entire tax reduction has vanished. What was absorbed was the additional advantage gained on September 1 by increasing the excise discount from 20% to 25%. This mechanism is re-evaluated every two weeks, with the next major fiscal milestone coming in mid-September. Diesel is caught between expensive crude and a tight global distillates market The current price surge cannot be explained solely by crude oil benchmarks. Brent ended the week at USD 92.68/barrel , up 7.6% in a single week , while WTI reached USD 91.48/barrel , nearly 10% above the previous week's close.
