Energy Drives BET Record: Sector Holds 60% of BVB Index — NRG-IA
Piața de Energie Author: Ioana BuzoaicaThe Bucharest Stock Exchange hit a new historic high on July 10, with the BET index up over 41% YTD. Energy stocks make up 60% of the main index.
The Bucharest Stock Exchange closed Friday's session on July 10, 2026, at a new historic high. The BET index, the main benchmark of the local capital market, rose by 1.47% to 34,509.34 points, driven by an intensification of buy orders in the final part of the day. This brought the year-to-date gain to 41.21%. The rally was heavily supported by energy and utility companies. BET-NG, the sector-specific index, climbed 1.65%, outperforming the broader market, to close at 2,599.44 points. Electrica and Transelectrica stood out among the session's top gainers, on a day when OMV Petrom also contributed to the energy-driven momentum. The BET Record Has a Major Energy Component The BET tracks the performance of the 20 most traded companies on the BVB's main market. Each company has a specific weighting, and the movements of heavyweight stocks exert a stronger influence on the index's value. At the close on July 10, eight energy and utility companies collectively accounted for 60.05% of the BET index. OMV Petrom held a weighting of 15.79%, Hidroelectrica 12.99%, Romgaz 12.63%, Transgaz 6.44%, Electrica 5.37%, Nuclearelectrica 3.02%, Transelectrica 2.36%, and Premier Energy 1.45%. Simply put, more than half of the main stock index's performance is tied to companies that produce, transport, distribute, or supply energy. Banca Transilvania remains the largest individual company in the BET, with an 18.92% weighting, but energy is by far the most dominant sector when companies are grouped together. This structure explains why a strong session for Electrica, Transelectrica, and OMV Petrom can significantly lift the entire market, even if the performance of other companies remains more subdued. Electrica and Transelectrica Drive the Session's Momentum Electrica closed the day at RON 44.90 per share, while Transelectrica reached RON 114.40. OMV Petrom stood at RON 1.199, while Hidroelectrica closed at RON 205, Romgaz at RON 15.50, Transgaz at RON 97, and Nuclearelectrica at RON 71. Electrica and Transelectrica represent two different components of the same system. Electrica is primarily exposed to energy distribution and supply, while Transelectrica manages the national electricity transmission grid. The simultaneous rise of both stocks focused investor attention on the infrastructure supporting market operations and the integration of new generation capacities. At the same time, OMV Petrom, Hidroelectrica, and Romgaz carry a much larger weight in the BET calculation. Even minor fluctuations in these companies can have a significant impact on the index, precisely due to their market capitalization. The market also benefited from gains outside the energy sector. TeraPlast was among the day's most dynamic stocks, and Banca Transilvania, the company with the largest individual weight in the BET, contributed to the overall advance. The record was therefore not driven by a single stock, but energy provided one of the strongest directions for the session. Investors Trade Over RON 135 Million The total turnover on Friday reached RON 135.39 million, equivalent to approximately EUR 25.87 million. Equity trading accounted for RON 111.55 million, executed across 9,734 transactions. Most indices closed in positive territory. BET-Plus rose by 1.42%, BET-BK, a benchmark used by investment funds, advanced by 1.18%, and BET-XT, which includes a larger number of blue-chip companies, climbed by 1.29%. BET-FI was the main exception, declining by 0.48%. The fact that BET-NG outperformed the general index shows that energy and utilities made an above-average contribution to the market. This was not merely due to the size of these companies, but also reflected consistent gains recorded by power infrastructure stocks. The Romanian Stock Exchange Becomes a Map of the Energy Sector The composition of the BET reflects the transformation of the Romanian capital market in recent years. The listing of Hidroelectrica added one of the region's largest electricity producers to the exchange, while OMV Petrom, Romgaz, Nuclearelectrica, Transgaz, Transelectrica, and Electrica offer exposure to almost the entire energy value chain. Through the stock exchange, investors can track oil and gas production, hydropower, nuclear energy, gas transmission, the national power grid, and distribution to end consumers all in one market. The BET is no longer dominated exclusively by banks and financial services; it has largely become a barometer of Romanian energy. This concentration provides the market with a solid foundation of large companies with strategic assets and well-defined roles in the economy. At the same time, it makes the index more sensitive to financial results, investments, regulated tariffs, dividends, and energy policy decisions associated with these companies. A Year-to-Date Gain of Over 41% Raises Expectations The BET's 41.21% year-to-date surge places the stock exchange in a phase where each new record raises investor expectations. Following such an…
