PPC acquires ABO Energy units in Poland and Hungary — NRG-IA

PPC is accelerating its expansion in Central Europe through an agreement to acquire ABO Energy's subsidiaries in Poland and Hungary, along with their local teams, operational solar assets, and a development pipeline of approximately 2 GW. The transaction, announced on August 7 by German developer ABO Energy, is subject to the necessary approvals and is expected to close by the end of 2026. The package includes 38 employees, five operational solar farms with a total capacity of 82 MW, and another 17 MW solar project nearing completion. In total, PPC gains access to 99 MW of operational or near-operational solar capacity, but the strategic scale of the transaction is much larger: approximately 2 GW of projects in various stages of development. The transaction price has not been disclosed. PPC is Buying a Development Platform, Not 2 GW of Installed Capacity The approximately 2 GW represents a project pipeline, not installed capacity or actual generation. The projects must progress through permitting, grid connection, financing, final investment decisions, and construction before becoming operational power plants. This distinction changes the economics of the transaction. Already-producing assets total 82 MW, with the near-complete project adding another 17 MW. The remaining potential value is concentrated in the projects that ABO Energy's teams have developed in Poland and Hungary over recent years. PPC is therefore acquiring more than just energy assets. The two local companies come with teams that understand the markets, permitting procedures, land access, local relations, and the grid connection process. For a group aiming to grow rapidly in the region, this development infrastructure can shave years off the time needed to build a presence from scratch. The 2 GW Pipeline Nears PPC's Target for Three New Markets The scale of the acquisition becomes clearer when compared to PPC's 2030 strategy. The group aims to enter Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia through both organic development and acquisitions, targeting 2.2 GW of installed renewable and storage capacity by 2030 . The approximately 2 GW pipeline acquired from ABO Energy in Poland and Hungary alone is, in numerical terms, nearly equal to PPC's entire target for the three new markets. However, these two figures measure different stages of development. ABO Energy's 2 GW consists of projects under development, whereas PPC's 2.2 GW represents capacity the group wants to have fully operational by the end of the decade. For the transaction to contribute to that target, PPC must convert a sufficiently large portion of the pipeline into financed, built, and grid-connected projects. This very difference is what makes the acquisition strategic. The group is not entering these new markets with just an investment target, but with an established project pipeline on a scale comparable to its regional ambitions. Poland Offers the Largest Growth Platform ABO Energy has been active in Poland and Hungary since 2019, developing solar, wind, and storage projects in both markets. Poland represents the largest share of the company's public development portfolio in the region. ABO Energy had accumulated over 1 GW of projects there, including wind, solar PV, and battery storage initiatives. In Hungary, the company had also developed hundreds of megawatts of projects, including co-located solar PV and storage configurations. Acquiring an already active local organization gives PPC access to a more diverse portfolio than the 99 MW of solar capacity that can be accounted for immediately or in the very short term. This combination is highly relevant in a European power system where the value of new renewables increasingly depends on the ability to integrate them with storage and sufficient grid capacity. PPC Turns Hungary Expansion into a Regional Strategy The agreement with ABO Energy comes just as PPC has begun building a direct presence in the Hungarian market. On July 24, PPC Renewables separately agreed to acquire an operational 57.5 MW solar farm in southern Hungary, along with the option to purchase a 49 MW battery energy storage system under development. Less than three weeks later, the agreement for ABO Energy's subsidiaries scales up this entry. Instead of a presence built around a single asset, PPC gains a local platform with personnel, projects, and in-house development capabilities. The same transaction simultaneously secures its entry into Poland, one of the markets the group has explicitly identified as a priority in its new strategic plan. This regional expansion is part of a much larger program. PPC plans to invest approximately €24.2 billion between 2026 and 2030 , aiming to increase its total installed capacity from 12.4 GW in 2025 to 24.3 GW by 2030 .
