In a city where the average driver lost about 83 hours in rush-hour traffic in 2025 , Archer Aviation is preparing an alternative that until recently seemed reserved for science fiction: boarding an electric aircraft in downtown Los Angeles, taking off vertically, and crossing a portion of the metropolis in 10–20 minutes . Archer Aviation and American sports and entertainment giant AEG are developing a vertiport at L.A. LIVE , the approximately four-million-square-foot complex in Downtown Los Angeles, located next to the Crypto.com Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center. According to the two companies, this is the first vertiport announced in downtown Los Angeles . The initial feasibility study is complete. The land, airspace, power availability, and community impact have been analyzed, and the project is moving forward to define operations and the passenger experience. The target behind this development is LA28 . Archer is the official air taxi provider for the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games and aims to turn the event into one of the first major demonstrations of electric air mobility in a metropolis. Los Angeles Presents the Exact Problem the Air Taxi Was Designed to Solve The city's road congestion makes the difference between ground and air transport easy to understand. TomTom calculated an average congestion level of 59.8% in 2025 for Los Angeles, the highest among US cities in its ranking. During evening rush hours, the measured average speed dropped to approximately 24.8 km/h . Archer is targeting a network where passengers arrive at a vertiport, board a Midnight aircraft, and fly directly to another urban or airport hub. The company generally estimates 10–20 minutes of flight time for trips within the future Los Angeles network. For some routes, the projected difference is spectacular. Archer estimates about 12 minutes in the air between Hawthorne Airport and Orange County , compared to around 56 minutes by car, and approximately 14 minutes between Hollywood Burbank Airport and the SoFi Stadium area , compared to nearly an hour in traffic. These figures represent estimates for future routes, not travel times for commercial services already in operation. However, they demonstrate the transport model the company is trying to build: urban distances remain the same, but gridlock is removed from the flight equation. Midnight Is a Small Electric Aircraft Capable of Vertical Takeoff The aircraft at the heart of the project is called Midnight . It is an eVTOL—electric vertical takeoff and landing—designed to carry one pilot and up to four passengers . Takeoff and landing are performed vertically, after which the aircraft transitions to forward flight using its wing for lift, behaving more like a traditional airplane during this phase. The projected top speed is approximately 150 mph (241 km/h) , and Archer is designing it primarily for short urban and regional flights of around 20–50 miles. The Technology Has Already Begun Flying Between Cities Midnight no longer exists only in simulations and promotional renderings. On July 30, 2026, a piloted Midnight completed a round-trip flight between Salinas Municipal Airport and Monterey Regional Airport in California, in coordination with the FAA. Each leg was completed in approximately nine minutes , according to Archer, compared to an estimated 35-plus minutes for the same journey by car. The demonstration is significant because it replicates the exact type of mission the future service is designed for: departing from an urban or airport hub, a relatively short flight, and landing at a second network node. For Los Angeles, the next challenge is no longer just making the aircraft fly. Infrastructure, procedures, charging systems, and airspace integration must be built simultaneously. The Vertiport Transforms an Aircraft Parking Space into an Energy Hub L.A. LIVE will have to do more than just provide a landing pad. A vertiport designed for electric operations must manage aircraft arrivals and departures, passengers, and, crucially, battery charging between flights . This is precisely why electrical power availability was part of the project's initial feasibility study. For the charging infrastructure, Archer and AEG intend to use BETA Technologies' systems based on the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) , an open standard adopted by the emerging electric aviation industry. This choice has implications far beyond L.A. LIVE. In July, Archer, BETA Technologies, and Macquarie Capital launched America’s Consortium for Electric Skyways (ACES) , which aims to electrify up to 250 electric aviation sites across the US . The plan includes airports and future vertiports in major metropolitan areas. If this model scales, the airport of the future will have to manage not just jet fuel and building power, but megawatts of electricity dedicated to a fleet of electric aircraft landing, charging, and taking off in rapid succession.
