Transgaz negotiates Argent LNG stake for Vertical Corridor — NRG-IA
Transgaz is attempting an unusually bold move for a national gas transmission system operator: to acquire an equity stake in a US liquefied natural gas (LNG) export project, establishing a strategic link between US LNG production infrastructure and the corridors the Romanian company is developing in Central and Eastern Europe. On August 6, 2026, in Bucharest, Transgaz Director General Ion Sterian and Jonathan Bass, President and CEO of Argent LNG, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic equity investment by the Romanian company in Argent LNG. The document is non-binding. Transgaz has not yet purchased shares, the value of any potential investment is not public, and the size of the stake under negotiation has not been disclosed. However, the significance of the MoU lies in the chosen strategic direction: Argent has invited Transgaz to join its shareholding structure, and the Romanian operator has agreed to analyze the structure of such a transaction. Should negotiations lead to an investment, Transgaz would not be limited to transporting gas imported into Europe. It would gain direct exposure to a company developing US infrastructure at the very beginning of the LNG value chain. A 25-million-tonne-per-annum terminal in Louisiana Argent LNG is developing a terminal at Port Fourchon, Louisiana, designed for a total capacity of approximately 25 million tonnes of LNG per annum (mtpa) . In the documentation filed in the United States, this capacity corresponds to an annual volume of up to 1,293.75 billion cubic feet of natural gas , equivalent to approximately 35 billion cubic meters of gaseous natural gas per year . This scale is massive, even when compared to European infrastructure. The theoretical annual volume associated with Argent's full development would exceed Romania's current annual gas consumption several times over. The project is planned to be developed in phases. The first phase is sized at approximately 12 million tonnes of LNG per year , with full development eventually reaching 25 million tonnes. Argent estimates the cost of the first phase at approximately $10 billion and targets the start of commercial operations around 2030. However, this timeline remains a developer target and depends on permitting, financing, and the final investment decision (FID). The documentation submitted to US authorities describes an extensive industrial complex: five gas treatment facilities, 12 modular liquefaction units, two LNG storage tanks with a capacity of up to 220,000 cubic meters each, two marine berths, and a connection to the Kinetica pipeline system. The project also includes the power infrastructure required to operate the facility, including its own power generation capacity of approximately 350 MW. Port Fourchon provides the project with direct access to Gulf of Mexico energy infrastructure The location is one of the project's key advantages. Port Fourchon is a major energy hub in Louisiana, connected to oil and gas infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico. Argent began in 2024 with an agreement for approximately 144 acres, and the project was subsequently expanded significantly. In July 2025, the Greater Lafourche Port Commission acquired an additional 743 acres to support the development of Argent LNG, bringing the total land area associated with the project to approximately 900 acres . The land expansion demonstrates the scale envisioned by the developer, but the terminal is not yet fully permitted for construction. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)—the US federal authority reviewing the project—has registered it under docket PF25-11-000 in the pre-filing stage. FERC explicitly states that Argent LNG is not yet approved. The company entered the pre-filing process in 2025, and in 2026 it continued submitting the technical and environmental documents required to prepare the formal application. For Transgaz, this means the opportunity is being analyzed at an early stage of project development, well before the terminal reaches a final investment decision and actual construction. This positioning can offer advantages to a strategic investor if the project progresses, but it naturally conditions any investment on the progress of permitting and financing. Argent has already received its first federal export authorization On July 23, 2026, the United States Department of Energy granted Argent LNG long-term authorization to export to countries with which the US has Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) relevant to US natural gas legislation. The authorization covers up to 1,293.75 billion cubic feet of gas annually for a 20-year period. For Europe, however, an additional step is required. Romania and other European Union member states are not part of the group of countries that automatically receive FTA status for US LNG exports. For deliveries to such markets, Argent requires authorization from the Department of Energy for exports to non-FTA countries. This component of the…
