Europe's largest nuclear power plant has come to depend on a local ceasefire to restore its power supply. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has negotiated a temporary window to halt hostilities in the Zaporizhzhia area between the warring parties, allowing the ground near the Ferosplavna-1 line to be demined and technicians to repair the 330 kV connection that can restore external electricity to the plant. This intervention comes after more than two weeks of Zaporizhzhia operating without any connection to the external power grid. The last available power source was lost on August 20 due to military activity in the region, marking the 26th complete loss of off-site power since the start of the war. Since then, the plant's systems have been powered by emergency diesel generators. However, the situation has entered a more sensitive phase: over the past week, the number of operating generators was reduced from four to two to conserve fuel, and the pumps used to maintain temperatures in the reactors and spent fuel pools have begun operating intermittently to reduce electricity consumption. The IAEA warns that if external power is not restored and the ability to bring sufficient diesel fuel to the site cannot be maintained, the plant could face a station blackout within days. Nuclear safety has come to depend on a ceasefire window The truce negotiated by the IAEA is not a general ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine, nor is it part of a broader political agreement. It is a strictly local and temporary measure built around a nuclear safety need: access to damaged electrical infrastructure. The Ferosplavna-1 line crosses an area affected by military operations. Before technical teams can intervene, the ground must be demined, and the work must proceed without the risk of renewed shelling. The IAEA negotiated the conditions allowing the operation to take place and is monitoring the repairs. This is the seventh local ceasefire negotiated by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi during the conflict for essential nuclear safety work. The fact that a power line indispensable to a six-reactor plant can only be repaired after negotiations between warring parties shows how much the safety architecture at Zaporizhzhia has changed. In a nuclear power plant, external power, internal backup sources, and technical redundancies are designed to work together. Currently, the integrity of these systems also depends on the battlefield situation, the teams' access to damage, and the feasibility of transporting diesel fuel to the site. Rosatom head Alexei Likhachev indicated that the local ceasefire window could last about a week. However, this duration represents the Russian estimate. The IAEA has indicated that the necessary work is estimated to take a few days, and the relevant safety threshold is the actual reconnection of the plant to the grid, not just the physical completion of a repair. From four generators to two: the plant is already conserving diesel Diesel generators are the last conventional power source available after the loss of off-site power. Their role is to supply electricity to essential systems when the grid can no longer support the plant. At Zaporizhzhia, however, this emergency backup has become the primary source of electricity for an unusually long period. The IAEA was informed that the number of diesel generators operating simultaneously was reduced from four to two to conserve fuel. This measure has nearly halved the electrical power available for the site's own consumption. At the same time, the pumps maintaining the temperatures of the primary circuits of the six reactors and the spent fuel pools are being operated intermittently. The goal is to maintain the necessary thermal conditions with lower electricity consumption. The IAEA has requested detailed data from the plant regarding the pumps used, their operating intervals, and the temperature trends of the reactors and spent fuel pools following the loss of external power. Grossi described the situation as deeply worrying and stressed that a nuclear power plant should never be put in the position of reducing the operation of essential cooling systems to conserve diesel fuel. This is the major difference from a simple temporary switch to backup sources: Zaporizhzhia has begun actively managing the electrical consumption of its systems to extend the autonomy of the available fuel.
